Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the world’s oldest college based sorority founded by Black women. It was established in January 1908 at Howard University in Washington, DC. Since its inception, more than 125, 000 women have been initiated into our sisterhood. Nearly nine hundred chapters are located  in various regions of the world; including the United States, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and Germany.

As we have celebrated our Centennial , Alpha Kappa Alpha’s program continues to have as its chief aim, “Service To All Mankind”. Program emphasis has shifted periodically to address the contemporary needs of the community and times.

On February 14, 1942, Gamma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., of the South Atlantic region, was chartered by eighteen astute and innovative women: Margaret Broadnax, Jessica Brown, Ruby Cornwell, Viola Stewart, M. Alice LaSaine, Margaret Poinsette, Geneva P. Singleton, Hattie Green, Julia Purnell (16th International President), Sadie Burroughs, Willa Curry, Emmie Gilkes, C. M. Thompson, Elizabeth Kiah, Charlotte R. Powell, Alleen Wood, Ollie Saxon and Caroline Wilson. Since that time, Gamma Xi Omega Chapter has initiated and implemented many programs of service to the Charleston Community. Service projects have been in the areas of education, health, human resources, political and social action, juvenile justice and delinquency prevention and youth leadership.

One of the finest hours of the chapter was the acquisition of 689 Meeting Street, a former office building, in 1978. The members demonstrated stability, economic strength and business vitality in purchasing the 7600 square feet office building to house chapter programs and to serve as an incubator for other programs that serve the community. Through dedication, faith and astute financial planning, the Mortgage Burning Celebration was held.
